Materials:
Empty plastic water bottle, about 16 ounces
Round balloon
(2) quart jars or deep mixing bowls
Cold water
A few ice cubes
Hot tap water
Instructions:
Read through the instructions and make a prediction about what will happen.
Stretch the balloon opening over the mouth of the water bottle.
Add enough cold water to one jar to fill it about halfway, then add a few ice cubes.
Add enough hot tap water to the second jar to fill it to the same level as the cold water.
Slowly push the water bottle into the jar of hot water.
Hold the bottle in the hot water for several seconds and observe what happens to the balloon.
Move the bottle into the jar of cold water and hold it in place for several seconds.
Observe any changes in the balloon.
Record what happened and explain the results.
