B. Apple Anatomy & Float Test Activity

Complete the Apple Anatomy & Float Test Activity.

Materials:

  • Cutting board

  • Knife

  • 2 apples

  • A large mixing bowl

  • Water 

Instructions:

1.    Cut one apple in half from top to bottom. Leave the other one whole.

2.    Using the halved apple, locate each of the following parts and explain what they are.

  • skin (peel)

  • lenticels

  • flesh

  • core

  • seeds

  • stem

  • calyx

3.    Fill the mixing bowl two-thirds full of water.

4.    Make a prediction about whether the whole apple and apple halves will sink or float.

5.    Add the apples to the water and observe what happens.

6.    Was your prediction correct? Do you have a guess about why the results turned out as they did? Do you think the results would be the same for other fruits?
